General information

Device detection

During device detection your system will be scanned for Siemens SX1
. The following interfaces will be supported:
- Infrared interface
- Bluetooth™ interface

Device detection automatically recognizes the interfaces available in your system and (de)activates the fitting options. In the next step the available COM ports are matched to the proper interface.

You can run the device detection in following modes:
Automatic detection
By clicking the button "Device detection" all interfaces will be scanned.
Detection on specified interface
By clicking one of the four option buttons detection will be started only on the chosen interface.
Detection on specified COM port
Selecting a port by choosing one of the four combo boxes will only test the selected COM port.

Option "Advanced settings":
By activating this check box you'll be able to select and scan the COM port manually on each interface.

Option "Intelligent port detection active":
(Only available, if option "Advanced settings" is activated.)
Deactivating this option forces the program to allow all interfaces. All COM ports having more than one possible interpretation were added to each interface. Doing this, you have the possibility to choose and scan all COM ports, which are not explicitly assigned by the system.

Troubleshooting

Not all manufacturers pay attention to the specifications on registering their devices in the system. It is possible that your mobile cannot be found by device detection. In that case please follow these steps:
- activate the option "Advanced settings"
- deactivate the option "Intelligent port detection active"
- choose the COM port on which your mobile is connected in the combo box referring to your used interface. You can get the according COM port from the software which came with your interface adapter.

In the case your device has not been recognized yet, please verify the following interface specific settings:

Infrared interface
- Assure that the device driver that came with your infrared adapter is installed on your system. If necessary visit the manufacturer's homepage for updated drivers.
- Assure that a virtual COM-Port is assigned to your infrared adapter. Visit the manufacturer's homepage for additional information.
- There has to be eye contact between the infrared interface of your mobile and your infrared adapter. Avoid too large distances.
- Ensure that your mobile's infrared interface is activated.

Bluetooth™ interface
- Ensure that the device driver that came with your Bluetooth™ adapter is installed on your system. If necessary visit the manufacturer's homepage for updated drivers.
- Connect the device within the software that came with your Bluetooth™ adapter (Pair device).
- Ensure that your mobiles Bluetooth™ interface is activated.

General information

Windows Platforms
These platforms are supported: Windows 2000, Windows XP.
Depending on the special installation situation on each PC, due to other installed programs or Windows internal problems the tool may fail to install the neccessary Windows components. You may be asked for the Windows CD supplied with your PC for proper installation. End ALL programs before installation. If you encounter problems installing network components in general ask your local PC dealer for Windows support and check:
http://support.microsoft.com

Language Versions
The supplied languages are Arabic, Catalan, Chinese Traditional, Chinese Simplified, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English UK, English US, Finnish, French, French Canadian, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Portuguese Brazilian, Russian, Spanish Mexican, Spanish Modern, Swedish and Turkish. On other Windows versions English will be used.

Windows 2000
Due to a bug in Windows 2000 there is a problem when another modem is installed AFTER you installed the Siemens GPRS modem via the Assistant or manually!
Windows 2000 uses the modem init strings of the LAST installed modem. This is not correct. Solution: Make sure the Siemens GPRS modem is the last modem you have installed. Check the Microsoft Knowledge Base at
http://support.microsoft.com
whether a solution is found; the bug has been passed on to Microsoft but it is still under investigation.

IrDA
IrDA has to be installed properly BEFORE you run the Modem Assistant's setup. Otherwise you may have trouble trying to connect to GPRS via IrDA. Check your IrDA connection and install the Modem Assistant again.

Modem Init String
It is left blank in the Dial-Up Network entry "Siemens GPRS" after installation of the tool. Yes, this is ok. Some Windows versions cannot send enough characters to the modem. Therefore the Modem Assistant does it itsself.

DNS server(s)
When you connect your PC/laptop to a local network AND to GPRS via your mobile phone the DNS server(s) of the local LAN connection will be used by Windows even when you make a connection via GPRS. This may lead to trouble when your GPRS provider wants you to use his own DNS server. Just discconnect from the local LAN to solve this problem.

Dial-Up Network
There is an entry "Siemens GPRS" being automatically created during installation of the Modem Assistant. If it is deleted it will be recreated at the next start of the Modem Assistant.

Administrator Rights (2000/XP)
You MUST have administrator rights on your PC! This means your account must belong to the "Administrators" group; it is not enough to have "some" of the admin rights!

COM port
If the Assistant reports that the mobile phone cannot be found though you checked the proper connection to a COM port of your PC, maybe some other program has reserved the COM port for itself. Well known programs are those that exchange data to Palm handhelds or FAX programs. Make sure those programs release the COM port!
Check your connection to the mobile with Windows Hyperterminal (send "AT+CGMM").
