--- SIEMENS GPRS ModemAssistant ---
--- useful hints (12.06.2003) ---

### Windows Platforms ###
These platforms are supported: 98, 98 SE, ME, NT 4, 2000, XP.
Depending on the special installation situation on each PC, other installed
programs or Windows internal problems the tool may fail to install the
neccessary Windows components. You need to have the Windows CD supplied with
your PC for proper installation. End ALL programs before installation. If you
encounter problems installing network components in general ask your local PC
dealer for Windows support and check:
http://support.microsoft.com

### Language Versions ###
The supplied languages are Arabic, Catalan, Simplified and Traditional Chinese,Danish, German, Czech, Greek, English, Finnish, French, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Dutch, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Swedish and Turkish . If you use an other Windows version English will be the default.

### Windows 98 SE German ###
Microsoft has announced a bug in the German edition of Windows 98 SE. The
country/region codes starting with 8 and 9 are missing. Therefore you cannot
choose Turkey for example. The MS article has the number Q251091. The fix is
on the CD in the folder Software\GPRS: "251091ger8.exe".

### Windows NT 4.0 ###
In case of WinNT Service Pack 6 is recommended/required. Remember to install
the Service Pack once more after any installation. You need to install the devicedriver manually after installing the ModemAssistant.

### Windows 2000 ###
a) Due to a bug in Windows 2000 you will get problems when you install another
modem AFTER you installed the Siemens GPRS modem via the Assistant or manually!
Windows 2000 uses the modem init strings of the LAST installed modem.
This is not correct. Solution: Make sure the Siemens GPRS modem is the
last that you have installed. Check the Microsoft Knowledge Base at
http://support.microsoft.com
whether a solution is found; the bug has been passed on to Microsoft but it is
still under investigation.

### IrDA ###
IrDA has to be installed properly BEFORE you run the ModemAssistant's setup.
Otherwise you may get trouble when trying to connect to GPRS via IrDA. Check
your IrDA connection and install the ModemAssistant again.

### Modem Init String ###
It is left blank in the Dial-Up Network entry "Siemens GPRS" after
installation of the tool. Yes, this is ok. Some Windows versions cannot send
enough characters to the modem. Therefore the Modem Assistant does it itsself.

### DNS server(s) ###
When you connect your PC/laptop to a local network AND to GPRS via your mobile
phone the DNS server(s) of the local LAN connection will be used by Windows
even when you make a connection via GPRS. This may lead to trouble when your
GPRS provider wants you to use his own DNS server. Just discconnect from the
local LAN to solve this problem.

### How to find/alter the connection parameters ###
Check your "Program Files\Siemens" folder for the "GPRS" folder. Inside of it
there are the details. The phone numbers can be found in "PROVIDER.PBK" and
the settings in "Provider.INI". DO NOT change anything unless you know what you are
doing! - On the CD there is a file "NetParameters.pdf" in the folder
Software\GPRS. Inside you find the parameters that we have got from the network
providers. At the last page, in the blue box there is a description how to
adapt to other parameter settings manually.

### Dial-Up Network ###
There is an entry "Siemens GPRS" being automatically created during
installation of the Modem Assistant. If it is deleted it will be recreated at
the next start of the Modem Assistant.

### Administration Rights (NT/2000/XP) ###
You MUST be an administrator of the PC! This means your account must belong to
the Administrators group; it is not enough to have "some" of the total of
admin rights!

### COM port ###
If the Assistant reports that the mobile phone cannot be found though you
checked the proper connection to a COM port of your PC some other program has
reserved the COM port for itself. Well known are programs that exchange data
to Palm handhelds or FAX programs. Make those programs to release the COM port!
Check with Windows Hyperterminal the connection to the mobile (send ATI9).

### Troubleshooting ###
a) If you cannot establish a connection try "Options" => "Device Search" to
search for the mobile phone. The device must be attached via data cable to a
COM port, lying in front of the IrDA port with it's IrDA enabled or via Bluetooth. If using Bluetooth ensure that the device is found in the Bluetooth Neighbourhood.
b) Win2000/XP with IrDA: If a connection cannot be established please check,
while a mobile phone with activated IrDA is lying before your PC's IrDA port,
whether a modem "S45 Modem" can be found in the modem list. Please remove this
modem from the modem list! Afterwards take the mobile phone away from the IrDA
port and bring it back there after a while. The installation of a modem "GPRS
via IrDA" will start automatically. The security warning from Windows can be
ignored - just click to continue.
