ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ Introducing: FF Meta Serif ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ It took three years and three designers to develop FF Meta Serif: ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ Erik Spiekermann, Christian Schwartz and Kris Sowersby. All ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ through the nineties, Erik Spiekermann had made several attempts ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ at designing a companion for his original Meta. Colleagues had ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ frequently been asking him which serif face would best fit to ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ FF Meta. He recommended Swift, Concorde, Minion, FF Clifford and ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ others until he realized that he should just make his own serif ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ Meta. ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ At the beginning of 2005 Erik finally admitted to himself that ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ he was stuck - all of his sketches looked like Meta with serifs ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ added, not like a serif typeface that could survive on its own. ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ He needed fresh eyes, so he got Christian involved who, in turn, ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ asked Kris to take on some of the workload. Obviously, a serif ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ Meta would need to fit in with the existing Meta family. After ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ drawing the first weights the designers saw that there was still ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ something wrong: the serifs were too strong so that both families ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ didn't really go well together in the same line, despite identical ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ x-heights. The theoretical approach obviously hadn't worked well ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ enough, so they decided to trust their experience instead. They ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ changed the metrics so that the letters are not mathematically ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ identical, but optically the same. Now what you see is what you ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ get. And they discarded the idea of a tighter spacing to make ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ it appear darker. After much trying, comparing, generating fonts ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ and printing out samples, the final formula for a new Meta was ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ found: two percent heavier and two percent more condensed than ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ the sans. ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ Erik van Blokland's sophisticated technology "Superpolator" ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ helped to extend the family, although manual corrections were ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ always necessary: the spirit of a typeface can still not be ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ delegated to software. ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ While it is a typeface that can stand up on its own in a wide ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ range of applications, the extra benefit is its close relation- ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ ship to the original Meta, its sans serif sister. The two ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ families can be mixed in the same line and one can be used to ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ accentuate the other. Using both on the same page adds variety ÛÛ Û Û ÛÛ and meaning to a text.
